The nobleman dropped his quill and read:

“I write this to acknowledge my role in your pain. I brought life, as you knew it, to a regrettable end.

“I committed unspeakable acts for self-gratification, causing calamity and bringing you shame.

“I wish not to be spared any guilt, nor to ask for your sympathy or forgiveness. I will forge a new path. I pray for you and I devote my remaining hours to bringing light to the world in your honor.”

Voice quivering, the priest responded:

“You’ve read it to me and to God. Now put it to the candle.”
