How I Felt After 30 Days Without Eating Grains

A month ago I announced to my Facebook friends that my wife and I were going to see about going a month without consuming grains. Here are my observations on day 29.

  1. I noticed, rather immediately — within just a couple of days, that I did not miss them. One of the impetuses for the 30 day challenge was that I’d gotten to where I couldn’t stop myself from eating starch if it was in the house. If there was bread — whole grain, especially — then I had to toast it and put butter on it and eat it. Sometimes I didn’t even bother toasting. If there were crackers — and there usually were — I had to put cheese on them and enjoy them as a snack. Within one or two days of not consuming any grains, whatsoever, I was no longer hearing the starches in the cupboard calling out to me.
  2. I had to adjust my sleep. Kind of like happened when I gave up smoking, I found that my sleep was affected. I had to remind myself to give my body time to adjust. For the first week or so after I stopped eating grains, I had a bit of a harder time falling asleep and then, once I finally did, I would wake up a few hours later, and lie about, awake. Just like when I gave up the tobacco, my sleep levelled off, or I got used to it. Either way, the problem went away.
  3. I wasn’t tired all the time. Used to be I needed caffeine to get through the morning…
